Roscommon, is situated in the west of Ireland in the province of Connacht. While it is a primarily agricultural county, it has benefitted in recent years from proximity to the influx of foreign direct investment into Athlone, which straddles the river Shannon. Roscommon is home to the Western Development Commission which was established in 1997 with a view to improving economic and social development and tackling population decline in the west.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
EU funded primary healthcare centre in Boyle
With a population older than the Irish average, healthcare is an important concern in Roscommon. A new primary care centre, one of 14 to be built in Ireland, will be located in Boyle. This initiative is funded via a €70 million 25 year loan from the European Investment Bank.
InterReg NorthWest RE-DIRECT project
EU Interreg programmes helped communities cooperate on cross-border challenges in e.g. environmental issues and social issues, transport links or energy supply. The Western Development Commission, based in Ballaghaderreen, was a partner in the InterReg NorthWest RE-DIRECT project, which enables unused biomass waste to be recycled as resources for carbon products.
Sustainable Farming in the Rathcroghan Archaeological Landscape
The medieval village of Tulsk is part of the archaeological landscape of Cruachan Aí, the oldest unexcavated royal site in Ireland. An EU funded project is working with farmers to develop innovative solutions to sustain a viable farming economy in harmony with the cultural and ecological assets of the landscape.
Shifting agriculture towards a low carbon economy
The agricultural sector accounts for almost 10% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, mainly for food production and transport. A programme to encourage companies and farmers to invest in innovative, green energy projects was promoted by the Northern and Western Regional Assembly, which is based in Ballaghderreen.
