The economy of Csongrád-Csanád County in the Southern Great Plain region is dominated by agriculture. The agriculture-based processing industry is also significant, and the Pick meat processing plant in Szeged is world-renowned. The University of Szeged and the research institutes make Csongrád-Csanád county an important national R&D centre, and it has the highest number of research establishments of any county in Hungary. Its three county boundaries are conducive to developing economic cooperation and unlocking logistics potential. The county’s natural and cultural history heritage as well as its musical and gastronomy programmes make it a magnet for tourists.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Development of wastewater treatment in Szeged and in four nearby settlements

EU co-financing helped develop the wastewater treatment and the sewerage system in Szeged and four nearby municipalities. The project resulted in a significant increase in the length of the Szeged wastewater network, and the construction of the public utility wastewater network in the four municipalities.

Szeged, ELI laser centre repair of transport connections

The headquarters of the Hungarian Centre of Excellence for Molecular Medicine (HCEMM) was inaugurated in the incubator house of the University of Szeged in the Science Park, next to the research centre, in early 2022. The project aiming to improve transport links to the ELI Laser Centre won around HUF 3 billion of EU funding.

Csongrád-Csanád county economic and employment development cooperation programme (Paktum)

Csongrád-Csanád County Council joined with the Csongrád-Csanád County Government Office to set up an employment pact. The 4-year programme, launched with more than HUF 1 billion of EU funding, set the goal of improving the employability of disadvantaged jobseekers and inactive workers.

Renovation of the József Tóth Theater and Vigadó in Szentes for tourism purposes

Nearly HUF 800 million of EU funding is being used to refurbish the energy system of the Rotunda at the Ópusztaszer National Heritage Park. Other cultural and touristic developments include the visitor-friendly development of the Szeged Wildlife Park and the Timișoara Zoological Garden, as well as the modernisation of the Tóth József Theatre and “Vigadó” in Szentes.
