Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg is located in the north-eastern part of the country, neighbouring Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine. Its GDP per capita ranks poorly among the nation’s counties, and out-migration is a typical phenomenon here. Farming dominates its economy, and the county is renowned for fruit growing. The level of industrialisation is low, with the processing industry predominating. Due to its location, significant logistical potential comes from the east-west trade routes; Záhony, near the Ukrainian border, is an important railway junction. The biggest river in the county is the Tisza; the risk of floods is high in the area.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Construction of the flood protection system of Felső-Tisza, Tisza-Túr reservoir

Within the flood protection improvements of the Tisza Valley, the Tisza–Túr reservoir is being constructed along the Upper Tisza, funded predominantly by the EU. The planned improvements will not only serve flood protection purposes, but also underpin developments related to urban management and tourism, water-related economic development programs, and the preservation of protected natural assets. 

Development of public transport in Nyíregyháza by purchasing new buses and establishing a service station and a bus site

In order to improve public transport in Nyíregyháza, and leveraging EU subsidies worth several billion HUF, 41 new, natural gas-fuelled, eco-friendly buses have been purchased, and an electric charging station and a bus depot will also be established. Thanks to the natural gas-fuelled buses, combustion gas emissions from vehicles as well as noise pollution levels have decreased significantly.

Transport development in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county I.

With the help of several billion HUF in EU subsidies, approximately 23 km of side roads were repaired in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County: e.g. roads were paved, and the drainage network was repaired. This not only provides better access to workplaces in this specific area, but also contributes to higher traffic safety. The renovated road section connects nine settlements, including Ibrány and Nagyhalász.

Development of the Andrassy Castle in Tiszadob for tourist purposes

The complex tourism development of Andrássy Castle in Tiszadob is continuing with almost one billion HUF in EU subsidies. The complete restoration of the castle building was already finished earlier. The present improvement aims at renewing the castle park, arranging a permanent exhibition about the Andrássy family, and expanding tourism services.
