The county is situated in the north-eastern part of Hungary. The county seat – Miskolc – and the Sajó Valley were for a long time the stronghold of Hungarian heavy industry, most of which has now ceased operating. Tourism can play a major part in the transformation of the economic structure. The county is home to two world heritage sites: the historical wine-growing region of Tokaj, and the caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. EU support contributes, among other things, to the development of tourism and job creation and to preventing an exodus of skilled workers.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Development of emergency and accident care for children

The Paediatric Centre of the County Hospital is being renovated. As the second largest paediatric care unit in the country, the centre provides healthcare services for almost the entire territory of northern Hungary. The aim of the project is to increase the accessibility and level of emergency paediatric services.


Cooperation in employment and economic development in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County

Job-seekers taking part in the Employment and Economic Development Cooperation Pact programmes in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county can attend consultations, career-oriented training courses and job fairs, and if they find a job a long way from home, they can receive help with travel and accommodation. In addition, employers can claim up to 100% support for wage costs. The aim of the pact is to facilitate employment.

GARLAND REG-LIVE CASTLE

The reconstruction of Füzér Castle in recent years means it is now an outstanding tourist attraction, not just regionally but also at national level. In the second phase of the castle reconstruction, further exhibitions were added in the Upper Castle, the Hanging Garden was renewed, the castle parking area was modernised, and solar panels were installed to facilitate environmentally friendly and economic operation.

M30 motorway implementation of Miskolc-Tornyosnémet project

A 56 km section of the M30 motorway has been constructed between Tornyosnémeti and Miskolc. The motorway which is part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) provides a faster and more comfortable link to nearby Kosice. The investment was implemented using HUF 1.67 billion of EU funding.
