Istria County is Croatia’s westernmost county and one of its most highly developed. According to data from the latest census in 2021, it is the country's fourth largest county. Among the main economic sectors, maritime and inland tourism, manufacturing, construction, trade, marine fishing and fish farming, agriculture and transport are highly developed. Istria County has also been receiving significant investments in its IT sector.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Construction of the House of Istrian Castles in Momjan
As part of the cross-border cooperation between Croatia and Italy and the TAKE IT SLOW project, the ‘House of Castles’ was established in Momjan. The ‘House’ is actually a new multimedia centre that has created a network of Istrian and northern Adriatic castles with the aim of improving the region’s tourist appeal. It also features a presentation on the famous families and products of the Momjan region.
Equipping the new day hospital and one-day surgery of Pula general hospital
Equipping the new outpatient clinic and surgical facility at Pula General Hospital has reduced the pressure on the acute care wards and allowed patients to undergo a greater range of diagnostic procedures in one day. The EU provided more than EUR 5.1 million for equipment such as ECG equipment, transport trolleys, oxygen therapy kits, surgical equipment, abdominal ultrasound and endoscopic equipment.
KLIK Pula
KLIK Pula is a centre for the lifelong development of innovative knowledge and skills in the catering and tourism sector in the city of Pula. The project will upgrade and fit out the existing tourism school, introduce more up-to-date educational programmes and further help the teaching staff to develop their skills. The value of the project is almost EUR 6 million and it is fully funded by the EU.
Extension and reconstruction of a home for the elderly in Buzet
The modernisation and reconstruction of the Buzet Home for the Elderly will provide accommodation for around forty new users, almost doubling its total capacity. The project is worth around EUR 3.3 million and is co-financed by the EU.
Public irrigation system Červar Porat-Bašarinka
The construction of the Červar Porat – Bašarinka public irrigation system, the largest irrigation investment in Croatia worth over EUR 14.9 million, was completed in April 2022. The system will irrigate 555 hectares of agricultural land in the town of Poreč and the municipality of Tar-Vabriga with accumulated winter water surpluses, reducing the impact of droughts. The EU co-financed 85% of the costs.
