Lying in the north-central part of Dalmatia, Šibenik-Knin County, with – all told – 285 islands, is the most indented part of the Adriatic coast. The sea is one of the county’s most vital resources in terms of transport, fishing, marine aquaculture and tourism. Farmland make up roughly 60% of the county’s area and, although the conditions are suitable for agricultural production, the potential is not being sufficiently utilised. The county has a rich tradition of fostering Mediterranean culture and a centuries-old tradition of hospitality.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Tourism valorization of St Anthony's Channel

After contributing more than EUR 900 000 to renovate and tidy up the footpath along the south-eastern bank of St Anthony's Canal in Šibenik, the EU provided a further EUR 2.55 million to tidy up, fit out and set up the visitor centre in Minerska Bay, Šibenik. The project seeks to contribute to the sustainable social and economic development of the local area and region.

Improvement of the water supply and drainage systems

Improving water supply and sewage systems is one of the county's priorities, and it is being achieved through a series of projects funded partly by the EU. For example, the EU co-financed the Šibenik agglomeration's project for EUR 35 million. For works in Knin and Drniš, it also provided close to EUR 10 million and EUR 4.6 million respectively. In the Vodice - Tribunj - Srima agglomeration, it contributed 73.9% of the EUR 15.2 million total.

Tourism valorization of the St. Nicholas Fortress

St Nicholas' Fortress in Šibenik is a unique monument of renaissance architecture that was put on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017. The EU provided EUR 267 000 for the drafting of the project documentation, rehabilitation of the fortress and accessibility improvements.

Demining of agricultural areas

The farmland-demining project, costing EUR 920 000, of which 85% is being met by EU aid, has demined farmland near the towns of Vodice, Skradin and Drniš, and in the municipality of Promina, i.e. nearly 67 hectares in all. The implementation of the project has returned mine-suspected agricultural areas to safety and enabled farming to resume.

Adriatic Business Centre – ABC

Funded entirely by the EU for around EUR 3 million, the 'Adriatic Business Centre - ABC' project rebuilt and fitted out business premises at the disused TLM factory complex in Šibenik, giving the county's entrepreneurs access to top-notch business infrastructure.
