Guadeloupe is one of the central Lesser Antilles islands in the Caribbean and has two main, connected islands. Grand-Terre, which lies to the east, consists of a limestone plateau, while Basse-Terre, to the west, is volcanic and mountainous. Guadeloupe’s industries are concentrated in the agri-food sector, and include sugar, rum and fruit juice production, as well as canning activities. Sugar cane and banana plantations focus on exports. Commerce, tourism and services, including administration, all play a major role in the economy, accounting for around 70% of local GDP. Guadeloupe has a young population and a high unemployment rate.
