Aveyron is a huge department which has a shrinking population as a result of deindustrialisation. It is largely rural: 13% of the workforce is employed in cattle and sheep rearing, particularly Lacaune ewes, whose milk is used to make Roquefort, Perail and Tome cheeses. The local and regional authorities are facing a major challenge to maintain the population and attract new people to a department where nearly one in three people is over 65 years old. One way that they are doing this is developing local infrastructure for SMEs.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

AMIO - Promoting inclusion

The EU is supporting organisations working to advise jobseekers and help them find work, like AMIO which helps people with disabilities

Méthan’Aubrac - Collective agricultural methanisation unit

Since 2018 Méthan'Aubrac has been operating a methanisation unit in Argences-en-Aubrac with the help of EUR 700 000 in European funding. The organisation works to produce energy (more than three million kWh of electricity per year) from livestock effluents from around 40 farmers who thus no longer have to spread liquid manure or remove it from their farms.

Bergers du Larzac - Improving cheese quality and production capacity

The Larzac Shepherds’ Cheese-making Cooperative processes ewe's milk collected by over 80 farmers into cheeses that it offers for sale. To meet growing demand, in 2016 it expanded its facilities with the help of EUR 500 000 in EU funding, enabling it to improving the quality of its produce and create new jobs.

Amis du château de Montaigut - Promoting inclusion

The EU is supporting organisations working to advise jobseekers and help them find work, such as the Millau Association for Guidance and Work for Jobseekers, which provides vocational training for people with disabilities like the Friends of the Château de Montaigut, which received EUR 252 000 between 2015 and 2020 for heritage restoration work and to pay staffing costs at historical monuments and sites in Aveyron.

Accident and emergency room in Decazeville

In order to improve access to health care at local level, EUR 30 million of REACT-EU funds have been invested to improve emergency and intensive care equipment and services in Occitanie. The 34 beneficiary projects include works to upgrade the emergency ward in Decazeville, which will also benefit from three new post-emergency beds.

Aligot Express

You can prepare the regional specialty in just one minute! Thanks to Aligot Express, a machine which prepares portions of Aligot from frozen and still produces its silky-smooth texture. It was developed by Maison Carrier and restaurateur Christian Valette, who intended for it to be used by caterers, and obtained EUR 220 000 in EU funding for the project, which has created jobs.
