Creuse is predominantly rural, and the second least populated department in metropolitan France with 117 500 inhabitants. It has rich natural areas with many rivers and lakes. The economy is mainly driven by agriculture (particularly cattle farming), industry (metalworking, construction materials, wood) and tourism, but health and social services are also major employers. The Creuse population has been decreasing since the end of the 19th century. The department’s median income is one of the lowest in metropolitan France, and 19% of households live below the poverty line.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Supporting growth of a metal fabrication company

The European Union has supported the growth of ACL 23, a metal fabrication company located in La Souterraine, by providing EUR 402 000 (25% of the total cost) to expand its buildings.

Development of a new spraying process to repair and finish surfaces

In Azerables, the EU has contributed EUR 125 000 to help various members of the European Cluster of Ceramics and Aerospace Valley develop a new spraying process to repair and finish surfaces with aluminium powder particles (‘RISOMLY’).

Development of a communal space

In Dun-le-Palestel, the EU has contributed EUR 49 000 (60% of the cost) to the development of La Palette, a communal space at the intersection of social lives, economy and culture. It offers a co-working space, digital tools, public services, youth information and community living support.

Acquiring tapestries with patterns based on works by J. R. R. Tolkien

In Aubusson, the EU provided EUR 600 000 (51.5% of the total cost) to help the Cité internationale de la tapisserie acquire 14 tapestries and 2 carpets with patterns based on original graphic works by J. R. R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings.

Creation and development of co-working spaces in rural areas

The European Union contributed EUR 52 000 (60% of the cost) to the CoLabora cooperation project, led by the Pays de Guéret Local Action Group, for the production of a guide to help create and develop co-working spaces in rural areas. This guide was written in collaboration with partners in five other EU Member States.

Soutien de la transformation numérique de la Filature de Rougnat

L’Europe a soutenu à hauteur de 66 000 euros (soit 30% des coûts totaux) la transformation numérique de la Filature de Rougnat, l’une des dernières manufactures de filature et de teinture de laine encore en activité en France.
