With over 2.6 million inhabitants, Nord is the French department with the highest population. The area enjoys many benefits as a highly urbanised border region, situated between Paris, London and Brussels. Despite its high rate of unemployment and the fact that certain areas suffer from notable poverty, Nord is doing well nowadays, thanks to its industrial tradition (metallurgy, transport equipment and textiles), a dynamic market sector, especially in the Lille-Roubaix-Tourcoing catchment area for jobs, and a reputation for excellence in biotechnologies and digital technology.
