Situated on the Seine estuary at the mouth of the Channel, Le Havre, in the department of Seine-Maritime, has inspired a host of painters including Monet, Dufy, Renoir and Sisley. Famous architects have also left their mark on the city, including Auguste Perret, who rebuilt Le Havre from the ruins of the 1944 bombings. The city centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Le Havre, with its population of around 170 000, is inextricably linked to its port – the second largest in France after Marseille, and the largest by container traffic. Le Havre’s deep-water harbour means that the largest vessels in the world can dock there.
