Covering an area of about 2 000 km2, Tenerife is the largest and most populous Canary Island. In the centre of the island, Mount Teide volcano stands at a height of 3 715 m. The capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is the second largest city in the Canaries (209 000 inhabitants). The service sector makes up almost 80% of its economy, which is driven by tourism (5.9 million visitors in 2022) and trade. The largest industry is oil refining, and banana growing is one of the main agricultural activities. Tenerife’s unemployment rate is currently at a 15-year low (15.91% in 2022).
