Lanzarote, the island of volcanoes, lies in the far north-east of the Canary Islands. It is flat with sparse vegetation, an area of 846 km2 and a population of 156 112. La Graciosa, the only neighbouring islet with a permanent population, is part of the municipality of Teguise. The island’s economy is driven by the services sector, and tourism in particular – around 3 million tourists visited in 2019. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic seriously affected the sector, and tourist numbers dropped by 26%. While not a major contributor to the island’s economy, agriculture shapes its unique landscape.
