Fuerteventura is the second largest Canary Island, with an area of almost 1 700 km² and almost 120 000 inhabitants, and the closest to the coast of Africa. It has both flat and undulating landscapes, a low coastline and long sandy beaches. The economy is dominated by the services sector, especially tourism – 2.8 million people visited the island in 2022 – and the construction sector. Tomato growing, fishing, goat farming and the production of Majorero goat’s cheese are the most important activities in the primary sector. The unemployment rate at the end of 2022 was 12.5% – one of the lowest in the Canary Islands.
