Seville, the capital of Andalusia, is located in the south-west of the Iberian Peninsula on the banks of the River Guadalquivir. Some 690 000 people live in the city and a further 1.5 million in the metropolitan area. It is the largest city in Andalusia and the fourth largest in Spain. Its river port, international airport and high-speed rail link make it an important communications hub. Its economy is dominated by the services sector, which employs 84% of the workforce. The cathedral, the Real Alcázar Palace of Seville and the General Archive of the Indies are World Heritage Sites. In 2023, Seville was designated a European Capital of Smart Tourism, highlighting its innovative approach to tourism management.
