Cádiz province, with its 285 km of coastline stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean sea straddling Gibraltar, lies in the southernmost part of Andalusia. Andalusia’s third province in terms of population, it has a population density of 167.5 inhabitants per km2, almost twice the Spanish national average, and is a hub for tourism and port activities. The port of Algeciras, alongside that of Valencia, is one of the most important in Spain, and is among the European ports boasting the greatest traffic of goods.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Flamenco Museum

Flamenco, listed by UNESCO as part of the world's Intangible Cultural Heritage, is one of the most important expressions of Andalusian culture. The EU contributed EUR 4 million towards the construction of the Andalusian Flamenco Museum and the Andalusian Centre for Documenting Flamenco (CADF) in Jerez de la Frontera.

Port of Cádiz

The port of Cádiz received EUR 15.6 million to construct a new container terminal and improve railway connections under the Connecting Europe Facility, creating jobs and strengthening the economic potential of both the city and province of Cádiz.

PDO and PGI products

Foodstuffs from Cádiz such as Sierra de Cádiz olive oil, sherry vinegar from Jerez, Tuna ‘mojama’ from Barbate, and ‘alfajor’ cakes from Medina Sidonia, and drinks such as Jerez sherries, Sanlúcar manzanilla sherry, Jerez brandy and Cádiz wines, have all been awarded the EU’s quality stamps for protected designation of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indication (PGI), which promote top quality food and drink from the region.

Digital transformation

To drive their digital transformation, the municipalities of the Province of Cádiz, home to over 50 000 people, received EUR 3.1 million in European funds. This funding bankrolled a range of projects aimed at digitalising services and reinforcing cybersecurity to make the local administration more transparent and accessible for citizens.

Naval industry

The EU has earmarked EUR 68.4 million for the construction of a research vessel for the Spanish Institute of Oceanography in the shipyards of Cádiz. This will set the province out as a reference point in the study and protection of the world’s marine ecosystems.
