Menorca is the third most populous of the Balearic Islands. Maó is its administrative capital, succeeding the former capital, Ciutadella. Almost 40% of the island is part of the EU’s nature protection network as well as constituting a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Its unique agricultural landscape has made it a byword for excellence in sustainable development. It also boasts one of the highest densities of prehistoric archaeological sites in the world. Tourism is the mainstay of Menorca’s economy together with the service sector.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Counselling for young farmers

The LEADER Illa de Menorca Association manages European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and European Maritime and Fisheries Fund rural, maritime and fisheries development projects in Menorca. These initiatives aim to provide, among other objectives, advice for young farmers, agricultural sustainability and support for Menorca's bid to be crowned European Region of Gastronomy 2022.

Subsidies for actions in the Menorca Biosphere Reserve

Minorca's biosphere will receive EUR 755 383 in RTRP funding from 2022 to 2024. The grants will be used for conserving and managing biodiversity and natural resources, helping develop more sustainable tourism and improving the island’s cultural heritage and landscape, among other objectives.

Es Fabiol Care Centre

The EU-funded Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (RTRP) will finance the renovation works to convert the disused schools in Es Fabiol (Ciutadella) into a social centre for deprived children, as well as comprehensive support for vulnerable families with children aged between 0 and 12 years.

Port de Maó, Sustainable Port

The ‘Port of Maó, Sustainable Port 2030’ project encompasses the following components: reducing pollution and improving water management at the port; introducing public transport for travel around the dock; completing the Illa del Rei Hospital and Interpretation Centre project; restoring the natural links with the city; and building a road with scenic lookout points. The project will invest some EUR 3 636 500, provided entirely by the NextGenerationEU fund.

Improving the energy efficiency of the outdoor lighting facilities of the Moll de Llevant and Moll Cos Nou in the Port of Maó

The European Regional Development Fund has contributed EUR 236 804 (50% of the total budget) towards ensuring better energy efficiency in two areas of the Port of Maó: Moll de Llevant and Moll Cos Nou, where it will reduce energy consumption by 73%.
