The city of Palma is open to the sea and located in the centre of a bay, in a highly biodiverse natural environment. Founded in 123 BC, its location has marked its history, which has left a legacy of buildings such as the Cathedral, Bellver Castle and the Almudaina Palace. It has some 419 000 inhabitants, and is the capital of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands and the centre of an urban area with a population of more than 570 000. Tourism is a major part of its economy, and the city is working to make it more environmentally sustainable.
