The province of Girona is located in the north of Catalonia, on the border with France. It is the smallest province in Catalonia and is home to some 793 500 people. The tourism, services and industrial sectors are economic mainstays in the province, with a particular emphasis on chemicals and meat products. It has a high volume of exports, and family businesses are very important in the province’s economy, both in terms of the sheer number of such businesses, and the amount of jobs they create.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

LIFE medCLIFFS

The Provincial Council of Girona is taking part in LIFE medCLIFFS, a project which is being carried out in the coastal areas of the Costa Brava and of the Cap de Creus Natural Park. Its purpose is to eliminate invasive non-native flora species which are a threat to biodiversity and to the area's true landscape. The total cost of the project is EUR 1 408,273, EUR 843 814 of which is being provided by the LIFE programme. 

Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination of Figueres

NextGenerationEU funds are financing a number of tourism sustainability plans, such as the one in Figueres, which has been allocated EUR 2.6 million. As part of the project, which is mainly focused on the town’s historic centre, authorities plan to modify the area surrounding the Dalí Museum, improve the energy efficiency of public lighting, install traffic signals for blind people and highlight the value of local wine and gastronomy. 

Cycling tourism as a territorial revitalizing

Between 2022 and 2024, the Consorci de les Vies Verdes de Girona will receive EUR 3.5 million from NextGenerationEU funds to promote cycling tourism as a means of revitalising the area. According to the plan, the green track in Sant Joan de les Abadesses will be connected to La Vall de Bianya, a cycle lane will be set up between Garrigàs and Arenys d’Empordà, and the street lighting on the green track in Quart will be extended. 

GiroNat

GiroNat is a project aiming to transform Girona into a greener and healthier city by integrating nature into the urban landscape. It includes renovating the Jardins de Les Pedreres, building a green wall at the Centre Cívic Sant Narcís and bringing nature back to schoolyards. NextGenerationEU funds will cover 95 % of the costs (EUR 3 203 507). 

Empowering Green Entrepreneurship

The Girona Chamber of Commerce is taking part in the Empowering Green Entrepreneurship project. It aims to promote green practices among new generations of entrepreneurs and to provide them with a sustainable, digital and environmentally friendly skillset. It is funded by the Erasmus+ programme and six organisations from four countries are taking part.
