The province of Barcelona has about 5 728 000 inhabitants, equivalent to 74 % of Catalonia’s population. Its economy, which is based on the services sector (74.66 % of GDP), also has competitive industry (automotive, metalworking, chemicals and pharmaceuticals), and a further substantial proportion is accounted for by port and airport business. The Barcelona metropolitan area, one of the largest in the EU, is home to the lion’s share of Catalonia’s economic activity and innovation.
