The Autonomous Community of La Rioja lies in the central Ebro valley. An area of abundant natural wealth, some 33% of the territory is protected under Natura 2000. Almost half of its 320 000 inhabitants live in the capital, Logroño. The local economy has a strong industrial base, accounting for more than 20 % of regional GDP, with agri-food and footwear being the dominant sectors. Wine constitutes one of the main strategic sectors for the region, which has focused on quality and innovation. The Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin is one of the most internationally recognised designations of origin, and a significant driver of tourism.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Mindchangers: Regions and youth for Planet and People

The Reginal Government and the Coordinadora de Organizaciones No Gubernamentales para el Desarrollo de la Comunidad Autónoma - a development NGO platform in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja - are partners in the project 'Mindchagers: Regions and Youth for the Planet and People' promoting awareness and active participation of young people regarding climate change and migration issues. 82.2% of the budget allocated to the region (EUR 867 565) will be provided by the EU through the DEAR programme.

Calahorra INCLUSIVE City

The Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (ISUDS) of the Municipal Council of Calahorra has benefited from ERDF funding. The Strategy includes the improvement of the infrastructure in the old town in the area around Arrabal Street and the refurbishment of the Casa Carramiñana and the Casa de los Curas, in order to house public services in the area.

Renovation of outdoor public lighting in the municipality of Rincón de Soto

The European Union contributed EUR 82 524 (50% of the total cost of the project) to the upgrading of the street lighting in the town of Rincón de Soto, including the improvements in energy efficiency.

NATURAL019

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) contributed 50% of the funding for various projects for innovation, oenological research and process improvement in wineries in the region, such as Natural019, aimed at improving the quality of wine and reducing its alcohol content.

LIFE MIDMAAC - Mid-mountain adaptation to climate change

The University of La Rioja is involved in the LIFE MIDMACC project, which aims to mitigate the impacts related to climate change in marginal mid-mountain areas through landscape management, while improving socio-economic development. It is funded with EUR 1 427 639 from the LIFE programme.
