Biscay is the Basque Country’s westernmost province, on the Cantabrian coast. It is home to areas of special ecological interest like the Urdaibai estuary, as well as 1 148 300 residents (78% in the Bilbao metropolitan area). The mainstays of the Biscay economy include tourism, manufacturing and, increasingly, the research, science and IT sectors. Urban redevelopment has made Bilbao a major cosmopolitan, avant-garde city. It is also home to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA).

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

HEALTHTEK - Technology for Healthcare education using smart gamification

The University of Deusto is taking part in several projects financed by the Erasmus+ programme, as well as coordinating projects such as HEALTHTEK, which is developing a virtual campus for medical and biomedical engineering students that includes educational games, biomedical apps and virtual patient simulations.

EU_SHAFE - Europe enabling Smart Healthy Age-Friendly Environments

EU_SHAFE aims to improve policies and practices to develop friendly, healthy environments that help older people in seven European regions feel more included in their communities. The project (led by Biscay Provincial Council) is receiving EUR 1 397 776.50 (82.18%) of ERDF funding.

Block4Coop - Driving and implementing blockchain technology in the development of Industry 4.0

The Biscay Federation of Metal Companies is leading Block4Coop, a project to promote blockchain technology in developing Industry 4.0 in the aerospace, aeronautical, metal and construction sectors. Its budget of EUR 1 632 653 is 75% financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Renovation and improvement works of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Galindo (Bizkaia)

The Galindo waste water plant is the centre of a complex sanitation network spanning Biscay’s most densely populated area. The total expected investment for work to renovate the plant and upgrade primary treatment will approach EUR 38 million (80% covered by NextGenerationEU funding).

POSIDON - POlluted SIte DecontaminatiON - PCP

Bilbao City Council and TECNALIA are taking part in the POSIDON project, with EUR 5 million of EU funding. Its aim is to find sustainable, innovative and effective solutions for soil decontamination, such as those being tested on the council land in Zorrotzaurre.
