Gipuzkoa is in the eastern Basque Country, next to France. It has a rugged terrain and invaluable natural areas, like the Aralar Natural Park. About 726 000 people live in Gipuzkoa (56% of them in the Donostia/San Sebastián metropolitan area). Services are the leading economic sector (66.5% of GDP) followed by the industrial sector, especially metallurgy and machinery. On the coast, the economy is more focused on agriculture, livestock rearing and fishing. The food and cultural scene in the capital Donostia/San Sebastián has made it a magnet for international tourists.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

SUstainable self-charging power systems developed by INKjet printing - SUNIK

The Tekniker technology centre is participating in multiple projects financed by the HORIZON programme. For example, it coordinates the SUINK project, which aims to produce new vehicle sensors that use vibrations from the moving vehicle as a source of energy.

Digital tech SMEs at the service of Regional Smart Specialisation Strategies - Interreg DEVISE

Donostia/San Sebastián has taken part in the Interreg DEVISE project, along with nine other EU partners. The aim was to make SMEs more competitive by promoting digital technology. Donostia/San Sebastián has focused on the retail and hospitality sectors, which are major contributors to its economy.

Construction of the section of the Azitain - Maltzaga cycle path, between Eibar and Elgoibar

The Azitain-Maltzaga link between Eibar and Elgoibar is the most technically ambitious of all the paths in the Gipuzkoa Regional Cycle Path Scheme. It has been selected as an example of good practices in actions co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

SHifting towards Renewable Energy for Transition to Low Carbon Energy -SHREC

Arrasate-Mondragón Council is a partner in the SHREC project, which has given out renewable energy bonuses for installing solar panels on homes and has run awareness campaigns. The EU has given EUR 1 567 540.25 to the project.

Cultural offer in rural areas

Gipuzkoa will receive over EUR 216 000 from the NextGenerationEU fund to expand cultural activities in rural areas. Funding has gone to projects such as Barne Begiradak in Gabiria, Zerain and Ezkio-Itsaso municipalities, Plataforma de Teatro’s Basque-language performing arts in Alto Deba and the Batura Festival in towns like Orendain, Altzo and Alkiza.
