The Autonomous Community of Asturias, which is located in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, has 401 km of coastline and a mountainous terrain which has hampered regional connectivity. The region has a negative population growth rate and the highest ageing index in Spain, with over half of its almost one million inhabitants concentrated in the triangle formed by the cities of Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés. The metals sector is the leading branch of Asturian industry, followed by energy and the agri-food sector, although the service sector has also expanded in recent years. 25 % of the land in the region is part of a biosphere reserve.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) support

Under the Rural Development Plan, EUR 32 million will be allocated from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) as tailored support for the Asturian farming model. That model is characterised by extensive, family-run and sustainable livestock farms located in mountain areas or forming part of the Natura 2000 network.

DIVAQUA

The Government of the Principality of Asturias is a partner in the Life DIVAQUA project. The project is being run in the Picos de Europa National Park with the aim of maintaining and improving the conservation status of aquatic ecosystems. The measures being implemented include the re-greening of the River Cares and the diversion of the rivers that feed into Lake Enol and Lake Ercina. The project is being 60 % financed by the European Union (EUR 1 416 903).

A-E-I Proyect

The University of Oviedo is coordinating the project A-E-I (Adults, Employment, Inclusion), which is aimed at teachers and the dissemination, promotion and sharing of good practices in adult education and social inclusion. It is being financed to the tune of EUR 155 475 through the Erasmus+ Programme.

"Ability" Innovative Strategies

The Xeitu Innovative Strategies project, which is a pioneering national-level initiative, seeks to promote the social and labour market inclusion of persons at critical risk of unemployment and exclusion. The project is receiving funding of over EUR 1 million from the EU Programme for Employment and Social Innovation (EaSI), and will benefit 500 people in Gijón, Mieres and Tineo.

León-Asturias High Speed Railway Line

Parte de las obras ya realizadas de la Línea de Alta Velocidad León-Asturias han sido cofinanciadas por fondos FEDER. NextGenerationEU, con una ayuda estimada de 121,6 millones de euros, financiará entre otras, las actuaciones de adaptación al tercer carril y al Sistema Europeo de Gestión del Tráfico Ferroviario (ERTMS) de las instalaciones.
