Messinia and its capital, Kalamata, is an area rich in history and unsurpassed natural beauty. It is home to world-famous archaeological sites, such as that of Ancient Messini, and important monuments, such as the temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae in Figaleia, one of the most important ancient temples, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. As well as the Neda and Kalo Nero waterfalls, the area’s picturesque villages are scattered throughout the Messinian Plain and Mount Taygetos. The area produces excellent local products, such as the famous Kalamata olives, olive oil and pasteli (sesame and honey bars).
