The Regional Unit (RU) of Zakynthos, commonly known as ‘Zante’, consists of the eponymous island and the Strophadia islets. The birthplace of the national poet Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos, earthquakes have played a key part in shaping its history. It is a very popular tourist destination partly thanks to the internationally famous Ai-Giorgis and Navagio beaches.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Waste Treatment Plant and Residue Sanitary Landfil
Completion of important infrastructure works, such as the local waste processing unit and landfill for the end-to-end processing of urban waste in Zakynthos.
Energy upgrade of the 3rd Primary School and Kindergarten
Energy efficiency upgrade in Zakynthos’ 3rd primary school and kindergarten, which is attended by more than 250 children daily. Works include insulating the flat roof/roof terrace and the external masonry walls, replacing exterior window frames and doors, installing motorised blinds, etc.
Water supply pipe (Lithakia)
Replacement of the central water main running from Damari Tsipou in Lithakia to the ‘Bohali’ central reservoir.
Water supply pipe (Agia Marina)
Replacement of the pipeline installed in the Agia Marina area, which will be extended in order to supply water to the mountain villages of Zakynthos (Loucha, Gyri, Exo Chora, Maries).
Special Primary School and Kindergarten of Zakynthos
Construction of new spaces and renovation work on the building that co-houses the vocational education and training lab for young people with disabilities, so that it can also house Zakynthos’ primary school and kindergarten for children with disabilities (10 classrooms, 1 multi-purpose space, 1 sports hall, 1 food area, 1 relaxation room, 4 labs, a library and an internal courtyard).
