The Regional Unit of Thessaloniki is a cultural crossroads with a rich history and many Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments, such as the iconic Rotunda and the various castles. The Archaeological Museum houses an extensive collection of objects from different eras, bringing local history to life. The city of Thessaloniki is also home to the Aristotle University, the largest in the country, with faculties offering a broad range of specialisations, promoting research and academic growth. The city is a cultural hub, hosting a number of festivals and events, such as the International Film Festival and the Dimitria Festival. A lively economic centre, it fuels regional economic growth. Thessaloniki’s Ladadika district with its vibrant nightlife and the Ano Poli, the city's old town, are extremely popular culinary tourism destinations.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Upgrading the western section of the Thessaloniki ring road

Infrastructure works to upgrade the western section of the Thessaloniki inner ring road (phase two) with three lanes in each direction and a traffic island. The project includes the construction of five flyovers intended to ease traffic flow.

Hospital of Thessaloniki 'ΑHEPA'

Improved healthcare services through the construction of a new wing to house operating theatres and administrative offices, reconstruction of the existing wing and supply of modern medical machinery and equipment for the University General Hospital of Thessaloniki (AHEPA)

Thessaloniki International Book Fair

Funding for the Thessaloniki International Book Fair launched in May 2004. The funding has made possible the creation of a new centre for cultural and commercial exchanges in the field of international publishing, attracting thousands of visitors from all over Greece and the world each year.

Thessaloniki waterfront

Major works to regenerate parts of the city’s waterfront Nea Paralia, Thessaloniki. The waterfront has been transformed and now includes footpaths, cycle paths, parks and even an amphitheatre for events.

Metro of Thessaloniki (Phase 2)

Construction of Thessaloniki’s main metro line (project 2), which includes the completion of the construction works, the supply of trains and the completion of the single-track tunnels running from the Sintrivani line crossing up to the Nea Elvetia station and the new cut-and-cover tunnel running from the Nea Elvetia station to the metro depot. Extension of the Thessaloniki Metro as far as the Kalamaria district, with the addition of five new metro stations and supply of trains to serve the extended metro line.

Firefighting equipment (Region of Central Macedonia)

Supply of modern firefighting equipment for the Region of Central Macedonia, such as water tankers and special firefighting vehicles, helping to boost the supply and quality of rescue equipment.
