Agriculture and livestock farming are the main economic activities of the Regional Unit (RU) of Evros, whose capital is Alexandroupoli. The RU is home to large cotton and wheat farms and its meat production is among the highest in the country. Also, in recent years, there has been a significant increase in tourist/visitor numbers and development in the tourism sector. The RU of Evros has a particularly rich natural environment. It is one of few RUs to boast two national parks (the Evros Delta and the Dadia Forest national parks) as well as eight Natura 2000 protected areas. It is a popular attraction during the summer months, as is the beautiful island of Samothraki, with its waterfalls and natural pools.
