The region is famous for its pristine natural environment, in particular the Evros Delta, Porto Lagos, Lake Vistonida, the river Nestos, the Rodopi mountains and forest, Dadia forest and Livaditis waterfall - points of particular environmental interest which, in combination with the archaeological sites of Abdera and Maroneia, make it an attractive landscape. However, the region is located in a border area and the modernisation of its economy is a challenge. In addition, the frequent flooding of the river Evros poses a recurring problem for the region. The budget of the Eastern Macedonia-Thrace Regional Operational Programme 2021-2027 totals EUR 639 098 844, with the EU contributing EUR 543 234 017.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Utilization of geothermy

In the the Municipality of Nestos, development of the geothermal field for the production of sustainable energy, to be used mainly mainly in agriculture, as well as the heating of livestock and poultry units.

Saving at home II

The ‘Energy Saving at Home II’ programme aims at making Greek homes more energy efficient, to contribute to the primary energy savings. The aim serves the broader national target, according to the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan. Eligible interventions concern, among others, thermal insulation, the replacement of frames, shading systems, the upgrading of heating systems, etc.

Vertical axis 70 Egnatia Road Xanthi-Echinos-Greece-Bulgarian Border

Construction and upgrading of a 3.25 km long sub-segment of the road "Dimario-Greek-Bulgarian border". The total length of the road is 8 km and it is one of the vertical sections of the Egnatia Odos. The section itself is a 49km-long ("Xanthi-Echinos-Greek-Bulgarian Border"). It is part of the transborder axis "Xanthi-Echinos-Rudozem-Plovdiv".

Vertical Axis 80 Egnatia Road Ardano - Ormenio (phase B)

Construction and upgrading of vertical axes of the Egnatia Odos on the vertical axis  80 (Ardanio-Ormenio). The project will transform the existing road, 37.5 km long, into an expressway with a section width of 12/14m. It includes settlement/village bypasses and the construction of five uneven junctions and a side road network.
 

Strengthening biodiversity

Actions aimed at boosting biodiversity by protecting the habitat of rare species in the rivers Nestos and Ardas and in the Rodopi mountains. Measures include developing a website dedicated to biodiversity, drawing up management plans for the conservation of vulnerable species and establishing an information centre in Stavroupoli and an information point in Komotini.

Extension of the mole of the port of Kavala

Works carried out to extend the windward pier of Kavala’s central port by 80 metres, contributing to safer mooring for passenger ships and pleasure craft, thereby also fostering maritime tourism.
