Heraklion is the largest city in Crete and the fourth largest urban centre in Greece, with a population of 174 000. The Regional Unit of Heraklion produces olives, olive oil, raisins, cereals, citrus fruit and other fruit and vegetables. Areas such as Knossos, Phaistos, Gortyna, Tylissos and Malia are international tourist destinations and home to renowned academic institutions and centres of technology.

Interventions to enhance the water potential of the Aposelemi reservoir with excess floodwater, to improve the adequacy of the water supply networks of the cities of Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos.
