West Attica is one of the eight regional units in the Region of Attica. It includes five municipalities (Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, Mandra-Eidyllia, Megara, Fyli). The main employment sector is the primary sector, as well as the trade and service sectors, due to the focal importance of the area. The area is rich in natural resources, e.g. West Attica’s peaks and the wetlands of Vourkario (Megara) and Psatha (Vilia); it is also of particular archaeological interest.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Anti-flood works

Agios Ioannis watercourse project in the Thriasio Plain, which aims to improve flood-prevention infrastructure and channel water to a receiving water body, in order to prevent the nearby national road from being flooded 

In the Municipality of Megara, 4 beaches are made accessible to people with disabilities

Four beaches (Nea Peramos, Varea, Alepochori and Kinetta) have been made accessible for people with disabilities who use a wheelchair

Infrastructure support projects for the provision of basic goods

Projects to support establishments selling essential goods, such as the social grocery store and social pharmacy in the municipality of Mandra-Eidyllia and the social grocery store and social pharmacy in the municipality of Elefsina

Water supply works

Water supply projects such as replacing the existing old and unsuitable water supply system in Megara to meet the city’s water needs. Procurement, installation and activation of telemetric systems for detecting and limiting/reducing the incidence of leaks in the existing water supply system of the municipality of Megara 

Upgrading building infrastructure in the education sector

Works to upgrade educational building infrastructure, e.g. construction of the 2nd Primary School and 2nd Kindergarten of Nea Peramos, the 2nd Lower Secondary School for Children with Special Educational Needs in Ano Liosia and the 3rd Primary School of Magoula

Actions in the field of culture

Cultural projects: work to stabilise and restore the north-east tower of the ancient fortress of Aigosthena and restoration of the Kyriakouleio Cultural Centre in the municipality of Megara
