Jõhvi with its population of 11 000 is located in north-east Estonia and is the administrative centre of Jõhvi rural municipality and Ida-Viru county. Jõhvi sits on the north-east edge of Jõhvi upland. Main local industries are food, mining machinery repair and metal industry; the area also hosts smaller businesses in sewing, construction materials and furniture industries.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Reconstruction of Jõhvi Basic School

The reconstruction project of Jõhvi Basic School (EU support EUR 4.76 million) created a modern high-quality school environment for students and teachers. The school building is more functional allowing it to meet the needs of future curricula. 

Establishment of a multifunctional performance and sports field at Jõhvi educational campus and II stage of the extension of the promenade in the city centre.

The project supported by the EU built a part of the new pedestrian promenade along with landscaping, paths and squares, and a stadium for sports and cultural events, which can also be used for PE lessons, smaller competitions, dance festivals, and outdoor concerts (EU support EUR 2.2 million).

Extension of the promenade of Jõhvi and construction of the music field

EU support helped to extend the Jõhvi promenade, erect a square of musical instruments between the concert hall and Pargi Centre, and to refurbish concert hall car parks.

Reconstruction of Jõhvi Russian Basic School

The EU has also supported the renovation of Jõhvi Russian Basic School building to modernise its learning environment (EU support EUR 2.9 million).
