Kärdla is located on Estonia’s second largest island, Hiiumaa. Kärdla, which was granted town rights in 1938, is the only town in Hiiumaa and the capital of Hiiu County, with a population of nearly 4 000. The most important manufacturing industries are food processing and plastics. Kärdla is a pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly town located about 125 km from Tallinn.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Renovation of street lighting infrastructure in the city of Kärdla
Kärdla’s street lighting renovation project (EU contribution of nearly EUR 365 000) involved replacing wooden and concrete poles with new metal poles, installing energy-saving LED lights and replacing overhead lines with underground cables.
Reconstruction of Kärdla Central Square
With the redevelopment of Kärdla’s central square, traffic infrastructure has been redesigned and new retail spaces, a playground, a fountain and green areas have been created. The project received EU support amounting to almost EUR 1.6 million. The aim of the project is to transform Kärdla’s central square in order to create an attractive, modern environment for residents and visitors.
Kärdla Basic School
A new energy-efficient primary school building with modern teaching facilities will also be completed with EU support. The new school building is planned to accommodate 340 pupils and 60 staff (EU contribution EUR 3.4 million).
Hiiumaa Gymnasium
With the support of the European Union, a new state secondary school building was built in Kärdla. The project, which received almost EUR 2.5 million in support, also involved the regeneration of the surrounding area and fitting out the building with the necessary fixtures, furniture and equipment.
