Tallinn is Estonia’s capital and most populous city, with just over 445 000 inhabitants. It hosts the country’s biggest airport, a passenger and a cargo port and many universities, financial institutions, industries and start-ups. It is also home to the EU’s IT agency eu-LISA and NATO’s Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre. Tallinn’s well-preserved Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Development of the Seaplane Harbour into a small port with a high quality service
The Estonian Maritime Museum, which opened in Seaplane Harbour in 2012, offers visitors a memorable experience within the unique Seaplane Hangars. In 2018, the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) supported the establishment of a marina with space for 50 recreational boats, which aims to increase visitor numbers at the Maritime Museum. The harbour is also home to museum ships.
Development of a new hall complex for the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre
A new venue will be built for the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre with EU support (almost EUR 1.3 million). The new building will host a concert hall with excellent acoustics and state-of-the-art technology.
Construction of the Tallinn Old City Harbour tram line
Thanks to support from the Recovery and Resilience Fund (EUR 26 million), a tram line will be built in Tallinn Old City Harbour. The new tram line, which will be nearly 2.5 km long, will make it more convenient to travel using different modes of public transport by linking Tallinn's main transport hubs.
Reidi road construction in Tallinn
The Cohesion Fund contributed over EUR 24 million to the construction of the Reidi Road. The project entailed the construction and reconstruction of roads, the creation of footpaths, cycle paths and recreational areas, and activities to mitigate negative environmental impacts. The road was opened to traffic on 29 November 2019.
Improvement of the environment and aviation safety of the Tallinn Airport airside area
A multi-stage project to improve the environmental status of Tallinn Airport and increase its air safety (EU support approximately EUR 35 million) established a new aircraft de-icing area which complies with all the environmental requirements; installed an engine testing area that meets noise and environmental requirements; lengthened the runway and the taxiway; modernised the navigation systems.
