The district used to depend mainly on farming, craft trades and the knitting industry, but is now industrialised, with many relatively small firms. It is located in the 'Tuscany of the East’, which has picturesque landscapes and a mild climate. The area around the spa town of Bad Sulza is regarded as the centre of the Thuringian wine-growing industry; its vineyards form part of the most northerly wine-growing region in Germany, Saale-Unstrut. The town of Apolda can look back on a long tradition of bell-founding, while the Apolda European Design Award ties in with a tradition of textile manufacturing that is still very much alive today.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Integration of unemployed people in the district of Weimarer Land

In 2019-2021, the association 'Bildung Beratung Beschäftigung e.V' (Education, Advice, Employment) carried out a project for the social integration of unemployed people in the district of Weimarer Land. The target group was the long-term unemployed and disadvantaged persons whose capacity for integration was severely limited for professional, personal or social reasons. The European Social Fund contributed over EUR 500 000.

Renewal of lighting system in North Apolda

The largely outdated lighting system in North Apolda is being replaced with modern LED lights. This will reduce electricity consumption by 70 %. The European Regional Development Fund is backing the project with almost EUR 1.5 million.

Tourism strategy for the Weimar region

The district forms part of the Weimarer Land - Central Thuringia' region for purposes of the EU's LEADER scheme, which funds initiatives launched by local people. Various projects to promote tourism, including the formulation of a tourism strategy for the Weimar region (2017-2025), have been carried out with the aid of LEADER funding.

KomMed: Personal development through competency development in the healthcare sector

The Thuringia Skilled Worker Perspective 2025' predicts that the health and social work sector will account for almost a quarter of the shortfall in the labour force. The KomMed project in the Bad Berka Central Clinic sought to cover management vacancies from within the workforce. The project cost almost EUR 500 000 and was supported, inter alia, by the European Social Fund.
