The official geographical centre of Germany - Niederdorla - is located in this district of north-west Thuringia. A broadly based small and medium-sized enterprises sector is a key feature of the economy of Unstrut-Hainich district. Timber, furniture, textiles and worsted production, together with agriculture, electronics and the automotive supply sector are important areas. Among other amenities, the 7 500 ha Hainich National Park is a tourist attraction. As a result of its biodiversity, this ‘primeval forest in the middle of Germany’ became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.
