Mansfeld-Südharz district is in the south-west of Saxony-Anhalt and consists of the former districts of Mansfeld and Sangerhausen. The Europa-Rosarium in Sangerhausen boasts one of the largest collections of roses in the world. The district’s second-largest town is Eisleben, also known for being where Martin Luther was born and died. For this reason, its nickname has been Lutherstadt, (Luthertown), since 1946. For over 20 years the town of Mansfeld, where Luther spent his childhood, has borne the same moniker. Every year, the ‘Historic European City’ of Stolberg organises the European City Festival with another European invited as the guest of honour.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Modernization at Born Vineyard
Mansfelder Seen wine route is part of Germany’s most northerly wine-growing area. Thanks to EUR 70 000 in funding from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, a young wine grower in Höhnstedt has been able to expand and modernise her vineyard.
Project “Behind the Scenes of the Theater Eisleben”
The European Regional Development Fund contributed about EUR 1 million (almost 90% of the total cost) for construction and renovation work for the project „Behind the scenes at Eisleben Theatre“.
Preservation and Expansion of Rose Varieties at Sangerhausen's Rosarium
Europa-Rosarium in Sangerhausen is one of the world’s largest rose collections. Some EUR 460 000 was provided in EU support for the long-term conservation and expansion of its gene bank.
Energy renovation Primary Schools “Martin Luther" and “Novalis”
In Hettstedt, two primary schools were renovated to make them more accessible and energy-efficient. The ‘Evangelische Grundschule’ and Novalis school received, respectively, EUR 1.3 million and about EUR 1.8 million in support under the European Regional Development Fund, i.e. almost two thirds of the total cost in each case.
European Cultural Route of Reformation
The district was involved in the cross-border European project „Cultural Route of Reformation“, the main aim of which is to promote sustainable tourism. The project received a total of about EUR 2.3 million in support under the EU’s Interreg programme.
