Tradition meets innovation in the capital of Saxony-Anhalt: now an internationally renowned centre of scientific research, but Magdeburg can also look back at a rich and varied history spanning over 1 200 years. This meeting of tradition and modernity is reflected not least in the ‘Ottostadt’ or ‘City of Otto’. The city is a place of many contrasts and it owes this not only to the mixture of historic buildings – such as the gothic Cathedral – and post-war architecture but also to Hundertwasser’s colourful ‘Green Citadel’ and the ultra-modern Magdeburg Water Bridge.
