Halle, birthplace of the great baroque composer George Frideric Handel, is in the south of Saxony-Anhalt. With close to 240 000 residents, Halle has a thriving economy and is also a major hub for both transport and science and technology. Alongside the venerable Martin Luther University, a great number of other educational and research institutions are to be found in Halle.

BURGlabs — Laboratories, Platforms, Research Environments for a Future Creative Industries
At Burg Giebichenstein Arts Academy, three laboratories, known as the ‘BurgLabs’ (https://europa.sachsen-anhalt.de/esi-fonds-in-sachsen-anhalt/informationen-fuer-interessierte/erfolgsprojekte/erfolgsprojekte-efre/efre-2014-2020/burg-giebichenstein), have conducted research into the interplay between materials, technology and the future. The European Regional Development Fund provided about EUR 1 million in support for the project.
Intelligent transportation systems in the city of Halle
To reduce air pollution, support has been provided from the European Regional Development Fund for intelligent traffic management measures as part of the Green City Plan.
NGA-Broadband expansion City of Halle (Saale)
A total of about EUR 10 million in funding has been provided from the European Regional Development Fund for broadband rollout in schools, businesses and private households in Halle under the programme „Sachsen-Anhalt NGA – Breitband EFRE“.
Renovation of the market church in Halle
The European Regional Development Fund provided EUR 3.18 million in support for renovation of [Marktkirche]church (https://www.marktkirche-halle.de/marktkirche/marktkirche-efre-kulturerbe-programm-/). Renovation objectives included improved accessibility and greater energy efficiency.
ScienceCampus Halle - Plant-based bioeconomy
The EU is providing some EUR 1.67 million by way of support for the project Science Campus Halle – Plant-Based Bioeconomy at Martin Luther University. The aim of the project is to promote interdisciplinary collaboration between plant, agricultural, economic and social scientists in order to develop new approaches to dealing with nature.
