The Alzey-Worms district in Rhineland-Palatinate is in the heart of the famous Rheinhessen wine region. Most of the district is given over to agriculture. Known as ‘Weinland Alzey und Wonnegau’, the district is Germany’s biggest wine-producing area. The main crops besides grapes are cereals and sugar beet. The ‘Rheinhessische Schweiz’ local recreation area contains small sections of forest. Although Alzey-Worms is characterised by its small and medium-sized firms, some international concerns are also based here. Manufacturing, commerce, economic services and health care are all major employers.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
wine label "protected designation of origin"
In order to protect and promote traditional and regional products, the EU has introduced quality labels. ‘Rheinhessen’, for example, is a protected designation of origin:. It guarantees that the wines bearing this denomination have been produced, processed and manufactured according to a defined procedure and can be verified as coming from the specified origin.
Renovation and conversion of a water tower into an observation tower
LEADER is an EU regional development programme which supports initiatives run by local people. The EU is providing LEADER funding of EUR 250 000 to assist with the renovation and conversion of the Wöllstein water tower into a viewing tower.
Research project to develop a rapid test system for recognising allergies and intolerances
The Europepan Regional Development Fund awarded Aesku.Diagnostics GmbH in Wendelsheim, Germany, around EUR 1.2 million for a research project to develop a user-friendly rapid-test system for the detection of allergies and intolerances. The amount corresponds to approximately half of the project costs.
Creation of a barrier-free festival site
The EU subsidised the construction of an accessible fairground in Alzey, in the immediate vicinity of the museum and tourist information centre, with around EUR 280 000. The planned improvements will make the fairground accessible, particularly for wheelchair users and people with visual impairments. The city of Alzey is part of a model region for accessible travel.
Extension of the municipal museum
The EU co-financed the construction of the new Steinhalle to extend the Alzey municipal museum with around EUR 440 000. The new accessible building serves to display important finds from the early history of the city dating back to Roman times. The Alzey Museum is one of the most important regional historical museums in Rhineland-Palatinate.
