In 2022, the average age in Mainz, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, was 41.6 years, making it one of the youngest cities in Germany. With over 40 000 students attending the numerous educational institutions in Mainz, there is great potential for business start-ups. This is especially true for the city’s well-established media, creative and IT sectors. The birthplace of the printing press and home to Johannes Gutenberg (1394-1468), Mainz entices visitors with various cultural offerings such as Mainz Cathedral, the Gutenberg Museum, the Electoral Palace, the national theatre and St. Stephen’s church with its impressive Chagall stained glass windows. The headquarters of the company Biontech, which made a name for itself with its COVID-19 vaccine, are located here.
