Ludwigshafen is home to one of the largest chemical plants in the world. Ludwigshafen’s port on the Rhine is one of the most significant inland ports in Germany. After large parts of the city centre had been destroyed during the Second World War, in the 1960s extensive building work was carried out, such as the construction of American-style flyovers and the relocation of the station. A new neighbourhood has also since been built in the area surrounding the former customs port, moving the city centre back towards the Rhine. The city, located in the heart of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area, is home to a university and hospital. Ludwigshafen was also the home town of Helmut Kohl, the long-serving former Chancellor of Germany who was named an Honorary Citizen of Europe in 1998.
