Paderborn owes its name to the Pader, which, at only four kilometres long, is Germany’s shortest river. The first University of Westphalia was founded here in 1614. Today, Paderborn is an important location for automotive suppliers and businesses in the food and IT industries. Many technology firms have emerged from the University of Paderborn, which was refounded in 1972. In addition to the ‘Westfälische Kammerspiele’ theatre, Paderborn is home to 12 museums that showcase art and historical collections, but also the region’s industrial heritage. The Hohe Dom, or cathedral, in the city centre is the seat of the Archdiocese of Paderborn.
