As Germany’s westernmost district, Heinsberg is part of the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion. The eponymous district capital attracts shoppers from the other side of the 77 kilometre long border with the Netherlands. Heinsberg district is characterised by wide agricultural areas, woods, meadows and heaths, such as those found in the Teverener Heide nature reserve and in the Nature Park Maas-Schwalm-Nette, the first cross-border nature park between Germany and the Netherlands.
