With over one million inhabitants, Cologne, located on the Rhine and boasting a cathedral, is the most populous city in North Rhine-Westphalia. One of Germany’s most important economic centres, Cologne is also a world-class cultural metropolis. This Carnival hotspot is home to over 180 different nationalities, and prides itself on being a cosmopolitan and multicultural city. Its landmark, the Cologne Cathedral, is among the greatest masterpieces of Gothic architecture in Europe and is one of Germany’s most visited tourist attractions.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
EIT Culture & Creativity
The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Culture & Creativity headquarters were established in Cologne in the autumn of 2022. The EU intends to make available up to EUR 70 million a year over the next few years to help it develop into a central agency for innovation for the cultural and creative industries, enabling local businesses to establish contacts throughout Europe.
Gremberger Forest
A change in the layout of paths through the Gremberger wood is intended to give the people in the district new access to nature while at the same time protecting the valuable old tree population. The project, which also includes the renovation of a refuge, a nature education programme and improved protection for bats, is being funded by the EU to the tune of EUR 750 000.
IHK Strong Veedel – Strong Cologne: conversion from two public spaces to multifunctional open spaces with retention function
Approximately EUR 700 000 in EU funding was allocated to the project to upgrade the Schützenplatz and the square on Leidenhausener Straße in Porz-Eil as recreational areas and to redesign them to provide flood protection.
IHK Starke Veedel – Strong Cologne: redesign playground Osloer Str./Athener Ring, Chorweiler
Under the programme “Starke Veedel – Starkes Köln (Strong neighbourhoods – Strong Cologne) EU funding is helping to improve living conditions in individual parts of the city, such as Cologne-Chorweiler. Thus, for example, the City of Cologne received EU co-financing of around EUR 190 000 for the redesign of the Osloer Straße/Athener Ring playground and the football pitch on Elbeallee.
