Bonn is the former capital of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is situated on the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia, and nowadays is the seat of numerous United Nations institutions, including the UN Climate Secretariat. Bonn is a prime location for businesses in the service industry. One of the largest employers is the historic Rhenish Friedrich-Wilhelm University, whose main building, the Electoral Palace, is a remnant of Bonn’s imperial past as a royal residence city. Life in the city is coloured by the approximately 31 000 students who make up over 9% of its population.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Digitalisation House of the Family
The Haus der Familie (Family Centre) of the Protestant St. Thomas Parish in Bad Godesberg wants to reach more people with the help of online courses. With around EUR 47 000, the EU took over the full cost of the necessary digitalisation of the Bad-Godesberg educational centre, which was a particular boon during the quarantine and lock-down.
Basic language courses for refugees
The Kölner Wirtschaftsfachschule für theoretische und angewandte Betriebswirtschaft (Cologne School of Economics for Theoretical and Applied Business Administration) organises basic language courses for refugees in Bonn in order to facilitate their access to the labour market. This is made possible by EU co-financing of around EUR 63 000.
Part-time vocational training – support entry – open perspectives (TEP)
The Christliches Jugenddorfwerk Deutschlands in Bonn offers young mothers and fathers support in finding part-time vocational training. The European Social Fund (ESF) contributed almost EUR 200 000, more than 40% of the required sum, to the project, which is intended to facilitate entry into the labour market.
Museum König #digital
The EU is supporting the expansion of digital applications in the education sector through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The Alexander König Zoological Research Museum in Bonn, for example, received around EUR 1.1 million in EU funds for investment in its digital museum programme or around 90% of the total budget for the project.
Emission-free city centre, mobile stations – City of Bon
The project Emission-free city centre – mobility stations aims to reduce greenhouse gases in Bonner and Beueler inner city. The first stations, offering covered bike racks, lockable bike boxes and e-charging stations, were inaugurated at the end of 2022. The project encompassing 30 mobility stations received EU funding of over EUR 1 million.
Emissionfree Citycenter
As part of the 'Emission-free city centre – mobile stations' project, the EU is promoting environmentally friendly mobility as a contribution to reducing emissions in the city centre of Bonn. The funding covers, inter alia, bicycle parking facilities, bicycle pump stations and ensuring accessibility.
