The district of Viersen lies between the Dutch border and the Ruhr and Krefeld-Mönchengladbach-Düsseldorf conurbations. The urban flair of the district’s nine towns and municipalities is combined with a rural idyll, and there are a number of protected areas such as the Schwalm-Nette Nature Park with its lakes, peatlands and forests. Industry and commerce are the mainstay of the economy; but tourism, too, is an increasingly important economic factor in the Lower Rhine region.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Shareuregio
The district of Viersen, the city of Mönchengladbach, and the two Dutch towns of Roermond and Venlo participate in the Shareuregio initiative, which aims to promote cross-border, shared electromobility. A pilot project for the sharing of electric cars and bicycles is being launched in the region straddling the German-Dutch border. The EU is providing EUR 138 2643 for this purpose.
Teilzeitberufsausbildung – Einstieg begleiten – Perspektiven öffnen
The training centre of the Kreishandwerkerschaft Niederrhein-Krefeld-Viersen-Neuss (Lower-Rhine-Krefeld, Viersen-Neuss District Crafts Association), which is in charge of the project for part-time vocational training, support upon entry into the labour market, and improving prospects, is benefitting from up to EUR 107 380 in EU funding. It offers young people with family responsibilities personalised support in finding an apprenticeship in the Lower Rhine region, which includes the district of Viersen.
Typisch Niederrhein 2.0 - Local Emotion am Niederrhein
The three-year project ‘Typisch-Niederrhein 2.0 – Local Emotion am Niederrhein (typical Lower Rhine 2.0 – local emotion on the Lower Rhine)’ sought to develop and promote the region’s touristic resources. The project implemented by Niederrhein Tourismus GmbH, based in Viersen, was provided with almost EUR 500 000 in EU funding to raise the profile of the region while strengthening local stakeholders and businesses.
Kompetenzzentrum
The Economic Development Agency for the District of Viersen set up a Centre of Excellence for Women and Work in the Middle Lower Rhine Region with the aim of increasing the regional female employment rate and family-friendliness within the world of work, also in order to meet the growing demand for skilled workers. Since 2015, almost EUR 900 000 of EU funding have been made available for this project.
