The independent city of Remscheid is located in the Bergisches Land region, surrounded by reservoirs and forests. It is also called the ‘maritime city of the mountains’, since Remscheid’s metal and toolmaking industry has historically maintained a variety of trade connections overseas and throughout the entire world. Due to its economic makeup, Remscheid is now often seen as the last industrial city in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Panoramic cycle paths in the Bergische Land

By redeveloping the former Bergische Bahn railway lines, which had relatively gentle gradients, the ‘Bergische Panorama-Radwege’ project created a network of cycle paths of over 220 km in length. The project, which received EUR 260 000 in EU funding, is an important contribution to North Rhine-Westphalia’s tourism masterplan, which connects the Bergisches Land, Sauerland and Ruhr regions through a network of cycle routes.

Digitalisation of organised popular sports in Remscheid

As part of the REACT-EU programme, the Sportbund Remscheid (Remscheid Sports Association e.V. and its associate clubs were allocated a total of EUR 420 000. The EU funding will serve to boost the digitalisation of organised grass roots sports in Remscheid through the purchase of hardware and related software.
