The Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site is a reminder of Essen’s history as the heart of the German coal and steel industry, and is one of the main sights on the European Route of Industrial Heritage. After representing the entire Ruhr area as the European Capital of Culture in 2010, the EU awarded the city of Essen the title of ‘European Green Capital 2017’ and recognised the positive effects of the structural change from a coal and steel city to Germany’s ‘third greenest’ city. In addition, the city hosts important art and cultural institutions with an international reputation, such as the Folkwang museum. The city is home to 11 European Schools, and the University of Duisburg-Essen.
