Lower Saxony’s second smallest district is located on Germany’s North Sea coast and has its administrative headquarters in the eponymous city. Two East Frisian islands, Langeoog and Spiekeroog, that attract large numbers of tourists also belong to the district area. The population of around 57 000 inhabitants has remained largely unchanged in 20 years. Traditionally, much of the land in the district has been used for agriculture which employs around three percent of the working population, while nearly half of the workforce works in the services sector. Manufacturing, trade and the hospitality industry are other important sectors.
